Sometimes an instructor. Always a student.

Foremost a citizen.

"This conflict began on the timing and terms of others.

It will end in a way, and at an hour, of our choosing."

President George W. Bush

Randy and Rob at Front Sight

Randy, Rob, and Chip attended advanced training courses at Front Sight in Nevada over the 2002 Memorial Day weekend. The photo on the left shows the dry firing practice line on Range 6 at Front Sight. The picture on the right shows the qualification targets used for a Nevada Concealed Firearms Permit. These are the same targets used at Front Sight. For more information on training available at Front Sight, click here.

The May 11, 2002 Piedmont NRA Instructors, Inc.'s Basic Pistol class was a lot of fun. We had 9 students at the Dumfries Hampton Inn and at Shooter's Paradise for the range session. The picture on the left shows the preparation for the class. The picture on the right shows part of an extended debate on "dominant eye determination" after the class.

The Basic Pistol class is the building block for the NRA's new Personal Protection in the Home course to be taught in June. Basic Pistol graduates know safety rules, how revolvers and pistols work, ammunition fundamentals, cleaning and storage of handguns, and can shoot and center a group on a target. Basic skills open doors to participation in competitive shooting sports like bullseye, action, and practical shooting (IPSC and IDPA).

Pssst. There is another Web site. Hint: if you value political correctness, do not go to the other Web site. You have been warned. On the other hand, if you want to read about very cool things like shooting a MAC-10 or Thompson submachinegun, click right here.

This is a picture from the other Web site.

"It's hard work being a good NRA firearms safety and shooting instructor. In many ways it is like teaching someone to fly an airplane. The activity is fun, but holds the potential for danger if you are not careful. Neither flying nor shooting is forgiving of inattention or mistakes. My favorite part of teaching shooting classes is the resulting empowerment of the women who complete the training. In a day and time when firearms infringe on political correctness, there are some smart women who realize that they are responsible for their own safety and the safety of their families. They know the police won't get there in time. They put firearms in a historical perspective. We read about other women in Bosnia being assaulted, traumatized, and often maimed or killed. The women who take our classes have decided neither they nor their children are going to be the victims. Our students have decided to fight back, know how to fight back, and intend to prevail."
