The First Annual Randy Mays Ditch Run
So, what is a "ditch run?" As you
can see from the picture above, there is a starting point where
competitors follow a marked trail, though a ditch if possible, where
targets appear around various corners. Some are ok to shoot and
some are "no shoots" and at the end is a Texas Star. Notice the
red steel target next to the paper IDPA target up near the berm.
Red steel targets are for cowboy guns and paper and some steel are for
modern guns. Since this was the first ditch run for the Unified
Sportsmen's Club (USC), several of the club's board members were there
to observe and to compete. Notice the orange NRA Range Safety
Officer cap. USC board members and many other members are trained
as RSOs, and some are NRA Chief Range Safety Officers. The match
set up was accomplished by Frank, Rex, and Lou who spend many hours
getting the steel targets in place. Steel targets are HEAVY.
Paul is taping up targets after the
previous competitor has run, or walked, through the course.
One of the cowboy shooters and club officers competes with his lever
action rifle and single action revolver. He has traded his cowboy
hat for his RSO cap.
Randy Mays, the namesake of the ditch
run prepares to engage targets. He won the revolver category
using a Smith & Wesson 625 Mountain gun (.45 ACP with moon clips)
and a Kramer horsehide holster. Notice the vest pockets and a
belt pouch are loaded down with moon clips. If you place the belt
buckle on the left side of your pants rather than in the front, it
makes it easier to carry revolver accessories where they are easy to
get to in a hurry. Randy, although a CRSO and Training Counselor,
was wearing his NRA Instructor cap to signify the most important job in
the NRA - training the next generation of young people, men, and women
in firearms safety and responsible firearms ownership.
Here is a better view of the S&W .45 ACP revolver in action.
Here are more pictures from the
Ditch Run, to be captioned in the near future.
The
next Ditch Run will be scheduled in November 2008. Check the
