Back to Front Sight June 2008

There have been a few adventures since the previous page was written, but most were in hospitals.  The last full match that I completed was in Missoula, Montana in July 2007.  I've had a couple of "DNF's" (did not finish) in local IDPA matches this year, but not much else to write about.  My last trip to Front Sight near Pahrump, Nevada was on July 4th, 2007 and I worked as an instructor.  Other than firing a three round burst from an Uzi to an exploding target, I didn't do any shooting on the 4th.

Last weekend, June 13-16 I attended a "4 Day Defensive Handgun" class at Front Sight as a student, to see how far my basic skills had deteriorated.  The daytime temperatures were around 106 F each day, and we had to spend quite a bit of time out in the sun standing on gravel and shooting at turning targets.  With just about any handgun to pick from for the class, I took a Glock 19.  When all of the factors like accuracy, reliability, ease of operation, etc. are taken into account, the Glock 19 is my all around "get it done" pistol.  I used a Side Armor holster and a few magazine pouches from Blackhawk, nothing fancy, but the setup worked every time.

During previous years getting a "Distinguished Graduate" certificate was a Very Big Deal, and anyone who can come close to this goal always tries to achieve it.  Even though I sat out a few relays to stay cooler than I would have been out in the sun, I still managed to muster up enough "muscle memory" (and I wish someone would explain this concept to me someday...) to shoot a -11 score with no errors on the reloads and malfunctions, enough for another "DG" sticker.  I had done this before with the Glock 17 and with various revolvers, but this was a first with the Glock 19.
